How to Record a Guard Comb Finish You Can Repeat

Record the clipper, base blade, guard set, marked length and direction alongside a photo of the finish. A guard’s colour alone is not a repeatable grooming record.

“The blue comb from last time” sounds clear until there are two guard sets in the room. Colour can help you find an attachment in its own case, but it is a poor description to carry between different kits.

A useful finish record captures the setup and the result together. It is not a promise that a measured attachment will create an identical outline on every dog. Coat texture, preparation and the way the work is finished still matter.

Five details worth keeping

The clipper and blade family. Write the exact model and the system it uses.
The base blade. Record the blade beneath the guard. Do not assume that any short blade is suitable.
The guard set and marked length. Use its name and millimetres, rather than colour alone.
The prepared coat and direction. Note whether you worked with the growth and any areas treated differently. This is a record of the professional’s chosen method, not an invitation to experiment on sensitive areas at home.
The result. Take a clear standing photograph with permission, then note what the owner liked and what should change next time.

For groomers: make the handover specific

At collection, ask one concrete question: “Would you keep this body length next time?” Separate that answer from comments about the face, feet or tail. Record anything that limited today’s finish, such as coat condition or the dog needing a break, rather than silently changing the reference.

For pet parents: save the outcome, not just the number
